These are, for example, communities that have voluntarily withdrawn (or, at times, been exiled) from urban contexts; or artists run spaces, collectives of workers, alternative educational centres that experiment new forms of collective learning and mutualism, putting forward alternative modes of managing labour and resources. The second chapter of CASE, the Public Program of We Will Design 2024, will present […]

TALAMO: the installation by Lemonot for miart and Design Week 2024.

“Talamo” [from lat. thalămus] is an Italian word with multiple meanings. Since the classical age it has indicated the bridal chamber and in literature and poetry, by extension, the nuptial bed. In mediaeval representations it was the stage on which liturgical dramas were performed, while in anatomy it denotes the central part of the brain. It is our bodies’ information […]

“Art, design and architecture: reflection and extension of society” Erica Petrillo, Curator-in-residence at BASE Milano

Erica Petrillo participates in the fourth edition of We Will Design 2024, In-Difference, as Curator-in-residence. “The lens through which I look at the fields of art and culture steers away from mere aesthetic considerations. Reflecting my background, I am interested in art, design, architecture as reflections and continuations of sociopolitical phenomena, contexts and communities; but also as tools for research, […]

«We have  lost  the  pleasure  of  being  together.  Thirty years of  precariousness  and  competition  have destroyed  social  solidarity. Media virtualization has  destroyed  the  empathy  among  bodies, the  pleasure  of  touching each other, and the  pleasure of living in  urban spaces.  We have lost  the  pleasure  of love,  because  too  much  time  is  devoted  to work and  virtual  exchange». design
We are delighted to be partnering with the British Council for the third year running. As in previous years, the call is open to UK-based designers who have previously participated in the British Council’s Circular Cultures programme, or global programme Making Matters, which aims to foster a global dialogue around the topic of circular design and making. Circular Cultures explores […]

We Will Design is a large experimental laboratory that every year welcomes and promotes projects by designers from all over the world, schools, universities, international institutions and young students.

A path that goes on throughout the year with residencies and international exchanges, where the practices and experiences of design become a tool to read – and sometimes solve – the many contradictions of our present.
A test for projects that see the light and meet the public at the Design Week.

What would it mean to transform BASE into a place of political presence where designers, artists and students live and reinvent the space? On the occasion of Design Week 2024, BASE opens the doors of its spaces to the construction of a temporary community that will live and work within the complex, transformed for the occasion into a “laboratory of convivialism“. As designers, architects and above all citizens,  we want to explore the ability to create different forms of interdependent relationships, considering our behaviors, gestures, feelings and spatiality. An invitation to reflect on the most innovative practices of coexistence, cohabitation and sharing present in Europe at the moment and their interrelation with the spectres of migration, gender, ability, health, cultural background.

“The Future of Nostalgia” by  Svetlana Boym, 2001 as published on monumenttotransformation.org
The word “nostalgia” comes from two Greek roots: νόστος, nóstos (“return home”) and ἄλγος, álgos (“longing”). I would define it as a longing for a home that no longer exists or has never existed. Nostalgia is a sentiment of loss and displacement, but it is also a romance with one’s own phantasy. Nostalgic love can only survive in a long-distance […]

“Culture Class: Art, Creativity, Urbanism, Part I” by Martha Rosler. June 2011
Throughout the 1960s, as former metropolitan empires schemed, struggled, and strong-armed to secure alternative ways to maintain cheap access to productive resources and raw materials in the post-colonial world, the Western democracies, because of unrest among young people and minorities centering on increasing demands for political agency, were diagnosed by policy elites as ungovernable. In a number of cities, as […]

Artist Marta Rosler on her work “Housing Is a Human Right”, realized in March 1989
“Camps as Trans-Local Commons” by Pelin Tan — From the series Refugee Heritage conversations one-flux,July 2017
What trans-local commoning practices could exist between urbanized camps such as Dheisheh or Al-Fawar in Palestine and those recently established in Turkey? How can we redefine and experience the infrastructure of thresholds, commoning practices and methods of experimental heritage that emerge within them? And how might architectural and design pedagogies provide a common base for such understandings? Distinct geographical conditions, […]

“I am here” by Laila Sit Aboha. Editorial introduction for Arab Pop, Spring 2023
As an adage widely attributed to Nagib Mahfuz goes, “your home is not where you were born. Home is where all your attempts to escape cease.” I borrow these words to talk about this new issue of Arabpop and to ask myself what “home” is: an aspiration, a condition, a necessity, but at the same time also pain, lack and […]
