We Will Design 2022

We Will Design: Design Week at BASE Milano, Between Micro-Utopias and Fantastic Institutions

From June 6 to 12, 2022, BASE presented the second edition of “We Will Design.” Designers from around the world, schools, universities, international institutions, and young students gathered in an experimental lab of imagination and inclusion, where design practices and experiences became tools to understand—and sometimes resolve—the many contradictions of our present, spanning near-future visions, everyday ideals, and micro-utopias.

EXHIBIT

For this edition of “We Will Design,” the first floor of BASE hosted Exhibit, a major showcase featuring the works of emerging designers, design studios, academies, and universities. The exhibit became a hub for research and experimentation, offering a glimpse into the new frontiers of design.

TEMPORARY HOME

casaBASE, the guesthouse at BASE, transformed into Temporary Home—a one-of-a-kind residency for five young designers from France, Germany, England, and the Netherlands. The designers focused particularly on the theme of the circular economy.

These rooms provided a glimpse into cutting-edge scenarios, becoming both home and workspace for the designers, who developed, displayed, and shared their projects with the public over the week.

MUSIC

Responding to visions of the society of tomorrow through music: We Will Design also means MUSIC. From June 5 to 11, BASE hosted a true musical parade to accompany every evening of We Will Design, Design Week at BASE.

The courtyard and interior spaces of BASE featured over 15 underground artists delivering live sets and performances, from dusk until late into the night. The evenings ranged from vinyl record sessions to experimental music.

KIDS

From June 6 to 12, BASE offered two kid-friendly moments to explore the We Will Design exhibit. With the guidance of Arianna Giorgia Bonazzi and Isabella Musacchia, children had the opportunity to transform into art critics.

Throughout Design Week at BASE, child-friendly mini-descriptions of the installations were available to help young visitors engage with the exhibits.

THEY WILL DESIGN

What would happen if the younger generation designed the world?
They Will Design invited students aged 18 to 26 from universities, academies, and educational institutions in Italy and abroad to deconstruct and rethink the concept of “institution” through imagination.

Five key themes were explored:

  • Integration and Inclusion
  • Digitalization
  • Diversity and Female Empowerment
  • Environmental Sustainability and Circular Economy
  • Intergenerational Dialogue

Design as a Tool to Understand Our Present and Shape Our Future.

We Will Design is a year-round initiative with residencies and international exchanges, where design practices and experiences serve as tools to interpret—and sometimes resolve—the contradictions of our time.
