we will design 2026 studio smarin

Living together, at our own pace. This is IDIORYTHMIA — the installation by studio smarin which re-imagines and re-configures BASE's Ground Hall during the Milano Design Week 2026.

As a symbol of BASE’s multifaceted spirit, the Ground Hall hosts an installation by Studio Smarin in collaboration with the Institut Français Milano: IDIORYTHMIA – the RE-U construction system.

It is a reversible and polymorphic furnishing system capable of continuously reconfiguring the space: from an agora to a screening room, from a workspace to a social area, all the way to a stage for performances or simply a place to linger, complete with capsules designed for rest.

An installation that behaves like a biological, social, and technological system: it changes function, rhythm, and atmosphere based on the uses and communities that pass through it.

IDIORYTHMIA derives from the Greek idios (own, personal) and rhythmos (rhythm). Thus, this installation creates the possibility of living and working together while maintaining one’s individual rhythm, striking a balance between autonomy and coexistence. A structure that is both temporary and symbolic, placing hospitality at its core.

Bio

smarin is a design studio founded in 2003 gathering a multidisciplinary team around an independent practice: research, design, and in-house production. It develops projects in furniture, scenography, and public spaces. Its creations — functional objects and furniture systems — foster interaction and collective invention. Comfort is explored through unexpected forms, conceived to support the well-being of all living beings. smarin challenges our everyday, automatic habits and invites us to imagine new perspectives and routines.
