Ula Sickle Relay
FAROUT
A black flag moves through the space without ever stopping. Its continuous motion, the beating of the fabric in the air and the passing from hand to hand give shape to Relay, a performance that transforms an essential gesture into an act of collective resistance.
Inspired by the mobilisations of recent years, and in particular by the Czarny Protest — the mass marches in Poland in defence of women’s rights — the work takes its starting point from a symbol that resists single meanings. The black flag crosses different struggles and becomes a meeting point between memory, protest and political imagination.
A group of performers takes turns keeping it in constant motion, entrusting the continuity of the action to a shared gesture. A live sound design, generated by stroboscopic lights, transforms light and sound into a single pulse. Between resistance and fragility, Relay reflects on the strength of bodies when they choose to act together.
Bio
Ula Sickle is a Canadian Polish choreographer and performer based in Brussels. Her work, rooted in contemporary dance, moves across disciplines drawing from the visual arts and contemporary music. She has been presented at international festivals and institutions including Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), Wiener Festwochen (Vienna), Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zurich) and Tanz im August (Berlin). She recently completed a PhD in the arts at KU Leuven and LUCA School of Arts in Brussels.
