The first event in the company of Materia Talk kicks off a series of three “postcard” encounters to reflect on the state of the world through the voices of writers and activists. We begin with Finimondo and a series of pressing questions:
Are we truly aware that the world might be ending?
Do the warnings from scientists and environmentalists go unheard because accepting a finite existence is too much for us to bear?
Are we genuinely prepared for the end of the world?
IL MONDO STA PER BRUCIARE? / Materia Talk
“What’s interesting in Melancholia is watching how the characters react as the planet that will destroy them is about to collide with Earth.” — Lars Von Trier.
With the participation of:
Fabio Deotto – writer and journalist. In his book L’altro Mondo, he explores the cognitive and cultural limits that prevent us from fully grasping the urgency of the looming environmental catastrophe. In Come ne usciremo?, he collects essays from eight Italian and international intellectuals, each imagining they are writing from a near future.
Alessandro Foggetta – editor at Iperborea. He will speak about The Fire That Took Fort McMurray by John Vaillant, a compelling piece of narrative journalism that recounts the devastating 2016 wildfire in Fort McMurray, Canada.
Andrea Grieco – impact manager, science communicator, and activist for environmental and human sustainability. As a promoter of the 2030 Agenda, he defines himself as a “worried optimist.” His reference text is Climate Justice: A Manifiesto for a Sustainable Future by Mary Robinson.
