Bio
Kinkaleri was founded in Florence in 1995. The members came together, bringing with them diverse experiences and academic backgrounds in various fields, with the intention of developing specific projects. From the beginning, their practice has been driven by the desire to work around concrete ideas, always taking care of every aspect necessary to the creation of their work. Kinkaleri operates across theatrical experimentation, movement research, performance, installation, set design, and sound materials—pursuing a language not based on a fixed style, but grounded in the direct evidence of the object.
The group’s works have been presented in numerous venues and programs in Italy and abroad, including theatres, contemporary art centers, festivals, and exhibition spaces such as Triennale/Teatro dell’Arte (Milan), Teatro Metastasio and Teatro Fabbricone (Prato), Teatro Grande (Brescia), Sophiensaele and KunstHalle Deutsche Bank (Berlin), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Kaaitheater and KunstenFESTIVALdesArts (Brussels), Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Pecci (Prato), Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), Kitazawa Town Hall (Tokyo), Oriental Pioneer Theatre (Beijing), Mercat de les Flors (Barcelona), La Bâtie Festival (Geneva), Santarcangelo Festival (Santarcangelo), Biennale Danza (Venice), Villa Romana (Florence), and MAXXI (Rome).
Among their most notable productions are Doom (1996), 1.9cc GLX (1998), My love for you will never die (2001), OTTO (2002/2003), WEST (2003–2006), I Cenci/Spettacolo (2004), Nerone (2006), THE HUNGRY MARCH SHOW / Between a carrot and I (2007) / Yes Sir! (2008), Alcuni giorni sono migliori di altri (2008), Ascesa&Caduta (2010), I AM THAT AM I (2010), Hit Parade (2011/2017), All! (2012–2017), Trilogia Puccini: Nessun Dorma (2010) / Butterfly (2015) / I love You TOSCA (2018), No Title Yet (2017), OTTO (2003/2018), Once More (2019), INFERNO (2021), OtellO (2021), HellO° (2022–23), AcrossKissKisYou (2024).
In 2002, the company received the Lo Straniero Prize – Bets on the Future for “the admirable group coordination within austere theatrical forms with raw and intense means, where dance becomes the hidden rhythm of reality and a subtle detachment generates necessary dissonances.” That same year, they also received the Ubu Prize for Best Dance-Theatre Performance.
Since 2001, Kinkaleri has been based in Prato at spazioK, located in the former Campolmi industrial area in the city’s historic center. Since 2013, spazioK has served as a Regional Residency Center, supporting artistic pathways across various creative fields and aimed at new generations. It is also home to is it my world? and Body To Be, two series curated by the company dedicated to the performing arts.
The current members of Kinkaleri are Massimo Conti, Marco Mazzoni, and Gina Monaco.
