F. De Isabella — MAI+ [ Milano Ovest ]

by F. De Isabella

What does it mean to create a work of art without touching the material but using only the senses? MAI+ is concerned with finding possible works of art in the city.

In the summer of 2024, F. De Isabella in the company of a group of teenagers went in search of random signs and compositions in the spaces of the city and gave them new meaning, new look, treating them as works of art.

MAI+ is a moment of contemplation, a permanent collection, an invention, an interpretation of reality, an invitation to train imaginaries.

Today MAI+ [West Milan] is also a Catalogue (online from October 3th) of urban artworks and a museum that can always be visited, every day at all hours, just follow the map!

“MAI+ is a moment of contemplation, a permanent collection in the city, an invention, an interpretation of reality, an invitation to train possible imaginaries. A pretext to re-appropriate the power of looking, listening and exposure. What does it mean to create a work of art without touching the material but using only the senses and experience? MAI+ is concerned with finding random signs and compositions in the spaces of the city, which, once named, acquire potential value.”

There is no one way through MAI+, but there is certainly a definite invitation to move through the city and create or indulge imaginaries other than those that most strongly dominate it.
It occurs to me that there may be not too great a distance between the audience’s approach and that of the creator (who creates what?), because this has many aspects potentially common to both: the movement of bodies in search of the works in neighborhoods and the encounter with territories, discovery and recognition, impact, perception, the always open possibility of personal or collective writing.

“To each of these unintentional creations is dedicated a plaque that includes technical details and a specific narrative and a catalog that collects them.”

The compositions you will encounter speak apart from us; the act of resignifying is an exercise in listening, translating and then synthesizing the personal and collective “knowledge” that is evoked. The words you will read or listen to do not already come from one voice, they are the fruit of an encounter. There were 6 of us became 7 and then 9.
