Artificial intelligence can be an extraordinary ally in mitigating our impact on the environment, but only if guided by scientific research and an ethical vision that balances progress and sustainability. Research is the engine that generates knowledge, and without sound research, technology risks being disconnected from the real needs of society and the planet. Together with Gianna Martinengo, CEO DKTS and President and Founder of Women&Tech® ETS and Veronica Nava, DISAT Unimib Researcher, we will explore the central role of humans in this dialogue between nature and technology. Because nature has much to teach us, and combining these two worlds will allow us to better adapt to the changing environment. The future is a balance to be built together.
Ecology and AI: Inspirations from Nature for Innovation
What if we told you that an algorithm can learn from the sounds of a forest to monitor biodiversity, prevent deforestation, or even anticipate climate change?
Gianna Martinengo, CEO DKTS and President and Founder of Women&Tech® ETS, describes herself as a “humanist by profession and technologist by choice.” “AI is not only a tool for efficiency, but also a means to enrich and expand the human experience in all its dimensions.” In the field of artificial intelligence, Gianna takes what she calls an “integral humanism” approach, and when she founded her first company (Didael) in 1983, the mission is technology-mediated interaction and dialogue between people. Since 1999 she has been dedicated to supporting women, and in 2010 she founded DKTS Digital Knowledge Technology Services.
Veronica Nava, DISAT Unimib research fellow, studies freshwater ecosystems to understand how they respond to anthropogenic pressures and changes that alter their delicate balance. “I strongly believe in collaborative, open and interdisciplinary science as an essential tool to address global challenges and improve the world.” For Veronica, research is not just a job, but a real mission, and meeting people who share her passion and work with dedication to protect the planet provides her with a continuous source of inspiration.
