The architecture collective Sbagliato and sound artist Caterina Gobbi transform DOPO? into a refuge from the frenzy of Milan’s “Weeks”: a space for dialogue, rest, exchange, and empathy.
The title “Fuga dalla Città?” (Escape from the city?) is a provocation, an ambiguous question representing the contrast between the immense attraction of the city, which during Fuorisalone welcomes hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, and the enormous stress it causes for its residents, who often escape Milan to seek refuge in places closer to nature.
The project by Sbagliato and Caterina Gobbi symbolically reconnects the city of Milan to an imaginary natural territory, creating a spatial and temporal short circuit.
Spatial devices positioned at some thresholds of the cultural center and trompe-l’œil prints on fabric alter the industrial character of DOPO?, hybridizing internal and external environments of the cultural center, connecting it to another dimension. The metropolitan context of the Corvetto neighborhood disappears as we immerse ourselves in a new natural scenario.
In dialogue with Sbagliato’s spatial project, Caterina Gobbi’s new installation weaves together natural and electronic elements into enigmatic sound creations. Digitally distorted and elongated field recordings combine with broken beats, noises, and layered voices to create an ambient atmosphere that unexpectedly shifts from meditative introspection to the pulsating rhythms of the rural.
