When we see lots of musicians opting to live and work here in Milan, rather than in London or Berlin, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to achieve.
Dino Lupelli, Director General Music Innovation Hub
Milan has a new engine for the creative industry. Set up within the BASE project, Music Innovation Hub is a social enterprise that sees music as a tool for liberation, inclusion and integration, a form of expression capable of unleashing hidden energies and breaking constraints in society.
Over the next few months a number of different entities operating in the music industry will take shape. One of these is Futurissima, the new-concept label determined to create an international platform for Italian music by offering young artists under 30 a 3-year contract, guiding them through recording, live shows, promotion, copyright management, licensing and synchronisation, image and communications, following a circular economy model. The aim is to generate disruptive music which breaks down barriers between languages, genres, and subcultures, looking to the future without denying the past.
Then there is Linecheck, the most important music conference in Italy, now in its fourth year, whose goal is to establish firm connections between operators in Italy and all around the world, and match European showcase festivals like EuroSonic and Ment, ensuring year-round promotion of calls for young professionals, seminars and masterclasses.
Under the MIH umbrella two further programmes will also be developed: musicROOMS, a multifunctional space for training, live sessions and presentations, and Chorus – Music for Social Change, an educational project dedicated to Milan’s music schools, and music education throughout Italy.
For BASE Milano, the aim is to take part in experimental and innovative processes in the music field, both by hosting Music Innovation Hub’s annual music programme and by embracing its social and educational mission. This represents BASE’s continued commitment to its vocation as a Learning Machine, made explicit in 2018, functioning as a machine for learning, which in turn learns by establishing a dialogue between different creative communities, thus enabling them to absorb, share and transform each other’s contents and influences in different areas, from writing to illustration, music, art, design and much more.
