EX LIBRIS, the independent library, is a project brought to you courtesy of Book Pride, BASE and ODEI (the independent publishing watchdog), and launched on June 21 2017. The independent library is made up exclusively of books published by independent publishing houses involved in Book Pride, which are not available for sale, but only for reference. The library aims to recreate the feel of a home library.
Hundreds of books contributed by publishing houses are available to read at the tables or on the sofas in the BASE common area or may be taken out and read at home. There is no librarian to oversee the books borrowed; neighbourhood residents and BASE visitors are an integral part of the project and are entirely responsible for returning books. What’s more, readers will have a container at their disposal for dropping off their own books, thereby increasing the range of volumes on offer.
Over the last few years the publishing industry has shown signs of making a rapid recovery, creating buzz in both core areas such as independent publishing, and other satellite areas like, for example, graphics and illustration. This is a sector that has been hit harder than most by the onset of digital culture and media, and is also one of the most dynamic in the world of cultural and creative businesses. This is why the EX LIBRIS project needs to be carried forward courageously through the uncertainty of its evolution. The aim is to tell a story, create content that arouses passion, engagement and identification, that grabs the attention of the media and which gives a place context. This place is represented by BASE, the new hub for incubation and cultural and social innovation in Milan, which, alongside make a Cube3, is supporting the project by lending the use of its own space.
You will find three wooden bookcases located in the bar-bistro area. On the side of the box are the four steps to follow:
- Choose: choose your next read from the selection on offer thanks to the independent publishers;
- Fill in the sheet: write the code or title of the book that you have taken from the shelf, along with your name and email address on the sheet attached to the side of the bookcase;
- Read: get comfy on one of the sofas or take the book out (for up to 2 weeks);
- Return: this library is a public asset, help us to keep the shelves stocked. When you finish reading, bring the book back to BASE.
EX LIBRIS’s mission is to support innovation from the bottom up and open innovation in publishing through a process of selection, pre-incubation, incubation of innovative entrepreneurial ideas and partnerships between teams of innovators and established economic operators.
