1968, between Milan and the world. A story told through the various forms of communication developed in a time of great creative fervour.
A tale that unfolds in images, starting with shots taken by photoreporter Uliano Lucas, who captured the atmosphere of those years in real time. A visual record of the teachings these movements passed onto communications and contemporary design.
Fondazione Isec and BASE Milano, in collaboration with Università Iuav di Venezia, bring you the exhibition “Un grande numero. Segni immagini parole del 1968 a Milano” (A great number. Signs images words from 1968 in Milan), running from October 2 to 22 2018 at BASE.
THE EXHIBITION
The story winds its way through material from the archives of Fondazione ISEC, public and private institutions, and collectors.
School papers – such as Parini high school’s La Zanzara – leaflets and fliers, reproduced thanks to mimeographs, dazibao, posters, graffiti, slogans and signs, as well as more structured publications like magazines and books, which gave voice to the protests of the time. Starting with the spare immediacy of the sign, focussing then on content, and gradually giving more space to colors and imagery, taking on inspirations and influences from the underground and counterculture.
A 1968 of paper and papers, side by side with videos and photographs which also set out to show the world of the assemblies as a reflection of the spoken realm in those years.
A special section of the exhibition presents fifty images shot by the great photoreporter #UlianoLucas. Also featured are photos by other figures of the time – including Walter Barbero, Norbert Chautard, Enrico Cattaneo, Cesare Colombo, Carlo Leidi, Silvestre Loconsolo, and Alfonso Modenesi – rare amateur shots as well as official media portrayals.
This cherished collection has been entrusted to the young designers of Iuav University in Venice, overseen by Paola Fortuna, who were asked to re-examine those years through their own gaze when conceiving the exhibition’s graphics and setup. The exhibition is brought to you with support from Consorzio Comico and the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo and Regione Lombardia.
Tuesday October 2, opening from 6pm
During the exhibition’s run: workshop activities and guided tours aimed at schools; a training programme for teachers; seminars and courses for researchers and historians; creative workshops for illustrators, photographers, and professionals, and public gatherings.
